One thing is certain, viruses on the Internet are plentiful. Antivirus software scans your PC for the nasty little critters and then someone creates a more vicious and damaging bug to attack your hard drive. You have to always use caution and ensure that your computer is protected.

Free Virus Scan

Virus scans are available everywhere. Some come with a price tag attached, like the Norton Virus Scan or the McAfee Virus Scan, while others are free, like an online virus scan. If you think your PC has fallen victim to a virus, you can use one of the many free online virus scans to correct the problem fairly quickly. Spyware is another issue that can hinder your computer’s performance, damage your hard drive and steal your personal information.

If you do use a free scan, spyware and virus programs are usually quarantined so they no longer affect your PC, but if you want to avoid the problem entirely, it’s best to install a virus scanning program, so your PC is always protected. A virus scan will usually examine every bit of the computer’s internal operating system, search for viruses and remove them. Virus scans go through all your files, but they are not intrusive and do not violate your privacy.

Spyware

Spyware is very common, but it shouldn’t be confused with an actual virus. A good scan will clean up any spyware issues that you may be unlucky enough to experience. If your PC is running slow, there is a good possibility that it has been infected with either spyware or a virus of some sort. Constant pop-ups, odd error notices, or a slow-running computer are normally the signs of an infection. In most cases, these are minor, non-threatening problems, but they can turn into nasty ones if not cleaned out.

Phishing

Phishing scams and more serious viruses have become quite common and these can be serious, system-threatening problems. Identities can be stolen and hard drives ruined by vicious malware and viruses. However, if detected early enough with an antivirus scan, the issue can usually be corrected or “cured,” so to speak. So even if you feel it is only a slight inconvenience or problem, scan your PC and don’t take any further chances.
