Secure Socket Layer (SSL)

SSL, short for Secured Sockets Layer, is an industry standard protocol used to encrypt secure data while being transferred on the web. The SSL protocols, originally created by Netscape, create a secure connection for sending data between the web browser and the web server, often where most data hijacking occurs. The encrypted data is scrambled before being sent to the web server, making data almost impossible to intercept successfully. SSL is commonly used by websites that accept credit card payments, such as online stores. Most online stores will advertise their use of Secure Socket Layers in order to build trust with potential customers.
