Millions of computers comprise the Internet and each one has a unique IP (Internet Protocol) address. Many of these computers provide services to others on the Internet which means they are server machines. A web server is a program that serves the files that form web pages to web users. Every computer containing a web site must have a web server program. Web servers have special software installed and have a very fast connection to the Internet. Because web servers need to be running all the time they are generally stored in specialized datacenters that maintain the servers. Most web servers have more than enough power to host numerous web sites at once. Web servers are commonly part of a larger group of Internet programs used for serving e-mail, and creating and publishing web pages etc. When choosing a web server take into consideration how well it works with your operating system and other servers along with its security levels, publishing, search engine and other tools that may come with it.
