DNS Servers

DNS stands for Domain Name System which enables users to locate computers on the Internet by domain name. A DNS server keeps a database of domain names and their corresponding IP (Internet Protocol) addresses. When you type a website's address (URL) into a browser, it passes the name to a domain name server and the server returns the correct IP address for the site. A number of name servers may have to be used to get the right IP address as maintaining a central list of domain name/IP addresses isn't practical so the lists of names and addresses are distributed throughout the Internet to a number of servers.
