An SQL server is basically a database server that uses the Structured Query Language (SQL) to accept requests for data. It's also the name of a Microsoft database engine belonging to its NT-based BackOffice family of products. The beta version of the next generation Microsoft SQL server, known as SQL Server 2005, is codenamed Yukon.
