UNIX Server

UNIX, is a multi user, multitasking operating system which is commonly used as the master control program in servers and workstations. Many commercial applications and most web sites operate on UNIX servers. There are many versions of UNIX and it is mainly used in the business world and not on PC's where Windows dominates. Unix was the first operating system written in the C language and has evolved into a freeware product, with many additions and upgrades provided in various versions of Unix by different organizations, schools, and individuals. It became the first standard or open system which could be upgraded by anyone. Unix systems are used in widely-sold workstation products from Sun Microsystems, Silicon Graphics, IBM, and other organizations. Unix and the client/server program model were important components in developing the Internet and the computer networking opposed to individual computers.
